Titan Cement Plant

cementkiln.jpg

Together with our friends down at Cape Fear River Watch and North Carolina Coastal Federation, White Oak-New Riverkeeper Alliance is against a proposed cement plant off Holly Shelter Road.

This plant, proposed by industrial giant Titan America, would be the 4th largest cement plant in the United States and emit an unbelievable 263 pounds of toxic mercury into our immediate environment each year, further polluting our waterways. In addition, the cement kiln would emit Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Sulfur Dioxides (SO2) which contribute to smog and acid rain, and belch 700 tons of particulate matter into our air each year, putting our neighbors at risk for respiratory ailments.  If the potential harm to local residents wasn't enough, this massive polluting plant will destroy 1,000 acres of wetlands.
