Please join us for a public hearing being held Tuesday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m. on a proposal to build an asphalt plant on the banks of Little Northeast Creek. I'm working with the community to help them get more information. Please click here to read a flier that I've helped them create detailing the potential health impacts, and HERE for a letter I've sent to the Board of Adjustment, the Onslow County Health Director and elected officials.

The potential impacts to our surface waters appear to be substantial as well.

I've done a quick model of the proposed plant location, aggregate piles, hoppers and access road below:

You can see in this Google Map linked that he has already removed almost all of the wetlands between this proposed facility and Little Northeast Creek. Any sediment or polluted runoff from this facility will run directly into the creek.

The Zoning Adjustment Board is required to take public health and safety into account when approving a Special Use. We are asking the Board to request a full public health risk assessment from the State Environmental Toxicologist. If you would like to read Mr. Morton's application and the associated Staff Report, please email me and I'll be happy to send it to you.

Please consider coming to the hearing being held Tuesday, February 23 at 604 College St., Jacksonville, 6:30 p.m. and speaking out on behalf of Little Northeast Creek. If you can't attend, please write a short letter expressing your concerns and send it to me at tess@wonriverkeeper.org. We will present it on your behalf at the hearing.

Sincerely,

Tess Sanders
